Project Overview

The City of Bonita Springs West Terry Street South Sidewalk Design Project is underway. This initiative creates a new sidewalk along the south side of West Terry Street, extending from US 41 (Tamiami Trail) to Old 41 Road. The proposed project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility by providing a continuous pedestrian path on the south side of the corridor. The new design will also incorporate a closed drainage system with curb and gutter to efficiently manage stormwater.

The project will compliment the existing shared-use path completed in 2022 on the north side of West Terry Street. The existing improvements on the north side consists of a 12 ft. shared-use path with a 14 ft. landscape/utility buffer, a 7 ft. buffered bike lane with six mid-block crossings with flashing beacons, significantly improving the corridor for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Project Benefits:

Provide:

  • Enhanced pedestrian safety
  • Improved connectivity
  • Drainage improvements
  • ADA compliance

Existing Conditions

There are no sidewalks on the south side of West Terry Street. This absence can significantly impact pedestrian safety and accessibility. Sidewalks provide a designated space for pedestrians to walk safely away from vehicular traffic, reducing the risk of accidents. While West Terry Street has provisions for cycling through marked bike lanes, the absence of sidewalks presents significant challenges for pedestrian safety and overall road usability. The roadway is a four-lane undivided roadway from US 41 to Bay Landing Drive and a two-lane undivided roadway from Bay Landing Drive to Old 41 with a posted speed of 30 mph.

Alternatives

The project team has developed three design alternatives for the new sidewalk on the south side of West Terry Street. These options include a 10-foot wide shared use pathway or a 6-foot wide sidewalk, with varying buffer distances between the proposed path/sidewalk and the roadway. Each alternative is designed to meet different needs and preferences for the community, ensuring a balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Alternative 1 - Typical Section

10-foot wide shared use path with a 2-foot wide grass buffer with curb and gutter.

Alternative 2 - Typical Section

6-foot wide sidewalk with a 2-foot wide grass buffer with curb and gutter.

Alternative 3 - Typical Section

6-foot wide sidewalk with no grass buffer and only curb and gutter.
